BENU Lunch Lecture

Lithium is the cornerstone in the treatment of patients with bipolar disorder. Because of its small therapeutic window it is important to adequately monitor lithium levels and renal function. Established clinical practice guidelines recommend to monitor somatic parameters prior to and during the use of lithium. However, adherence to these guidelines is known to be poor.

The community pharmacy can, considering the frequent and recurrent contact with the client, contribute to the improvement of monitoring practices while adopting a controlling, signaling and advising role. However, to facilitate in such a role, a pharmaceutical care protocol needs to be drawn up. For a correct implementation of this protocol, it must be tackled in a multidisciplinary manner.

Our aim is to investigate if a controlling, signaling and advising role of the community pharmacist can contribute to the improvement of monitoring practices on the basis of an integrated pharmaceutical care protocol.

We will start with a free lunch at 11:30 at the P.S.-boardroom. The lecture will take place from 12:00 until 13:00 in 3219.0024 lounge 3.
